Question 4:Give reasons.

(i) The rainforests are depleting.

Answer:The developmental and industrial activities on a large scale are leading to the gradual destruction of the biologically diverse rainforest. It is estimated that a large area of the rainforest has been disappearing annually in the Amazon basin. The topsoil is washed away as the rain falls and the lush forest turns into a barren landscape resulting in deforestation.

(ii) Paddy is grown in the Ganga-Brahmaputra plains.

Answer:The Ganga Brahmaputra plain area provides the most suitable land for human habitation. The area is dominated by a monsoon climate. The soil is fertile here and flat land is available to grow crops. People mostly grow paddy here because the cultivation of paddy requires sufficient water, so it is grown in areas where the amount of rainfall is high.
